BSDA for Thursday Feb 11, 2010 – Tobias O’Leary on Asynchronous Programming in WinForms and WPF
The next meeting of the Birmingham Software Developers Association will be Thursday, February 11 at 6:30 pm. Tobias O’Leary will be presenting Asynchronous Programming in WinForms and WPF.
Most of learned to program on the command line. One task at a time. The user got printf()s for progress updates and CTRL+Z to cancel. Then the GUI came into our lives and our command line training lead to the infinite hour glass of unresponsiveness. Now a days we know at least one or two ways to avoid this with WinForms, but WPF might be another matter.
We’ll first take a trip down memory lane and visit our old pals Application.DoEvents(), the BackgroundWorker, IAsyncResult, and others. We’ll then enter the new realm of WPF and it’s Dispatcher, and also find out which of our old friends have fallen by the wayside.
Also at this meeting we will have the annual officer elections, postponed from January. If you ever thought “Gee, I wish the club would…” or “If I were in charge…” or “I wonder what I could do to help out more…” now is your opportunity! Being a club officer is a rewarding and valuable experience.
The meeting will be at the usual place, the New Horizons Training Center in Homewood.

| The Microsoft AJAX Library is not just for asynchronous functionality. It actually includes some very helpful JavaScript classes. You can use some of these classes to develop JavaScript in a fashion more similar to C#. We’ll take a look at some of these classes and how they can be used to develop JavaScript more like object oriented C#.

A Developers Guide to SQL Server Integration Services – BSDA Meeting for November 12 2009
We’ve all been there. We develop a new system to replace some older system long overdue for retirement. The dread always comes around the data conversion step. Having to figure out the quickest, easiest way to get the data from the old system to the new. What most developers don’t realize is that they already have an extremely powerful tool for data conversion: SQL Server Integration Services. SSIS isn’t just for feeding your warehouse, it’s also a great tool for data migration. At the next BSDA meeting Robert C. Cain will be presenting “A Developers Guide to SQL Server Integration Services”. Come get an introduction and learn how you can be using SSIS for your projects.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm at the normal location, the New Horizons training center in Homewood AL.
Robert Cain is a Microsoft MVP in SQL Development, and works as a Senior BI Architect for ComFrame. His main responsibility is the SQL Server Business Intelligence Data Warehouse for the NASA ARES project. He is also a contributing author to the book “SQL Server MVP Deep Dives”. Prior to his current position, Robert spent five years working for a south eastern nuclear power company designing and developing the BI/Data Warehouse as well as leading the development team. Robert also spent 10 years as a senior consultant, working for a variety of customers in the Birmingham area using Visual Basic and C#. He also maintains the popular blog http://arcanecode.com .
T-SQL – Common Table Expression (CTEs)
Do you need recursive queries, do you want your T-SQL to be easier to read and maintain? Come checkout the presentation.
Bug.Net – Nov 10, 2009 – Intro to Prism V2 in Silverlight 3

In this presentation, Sista SriHarsha will given an introduction and overview of Prism V2 for Silverlight 3.
As usual the meeting will take place at the New Horizons offices. Meeting will kick off at 6:30 pm, there will be food provided, and swag given away at the end of the meeting.
