BSDA LINQ Bootcamp Wrapup

leave a comment »

At the recent BSDA LINQ Bootcamp, there were two chapters in the book that we did not get to. BSDA member Vito Amato has volunteered to cover these chapters for us at the next Birmingham Software Developers Association meeting.

Programming Microsoft LINQ Chapters 11 and 13

Inside Expression Trees (Chapter 11)
The chapter starts with an introduction to the characteristics of expression trees and the lambda expression syntax.  Then leads to dissecting an expression tree, analyzing the more common and important node types. The chapter closes with showing some techniques for navigating and modifying an expression tree and finally reaching some discussion about the dynamic generation of expression trees.

Parallel LINQ (Chapter 13)
This chapter introduces the basic concepts of the Parallel Extension to the .NET Framework and describes the syntax and common uses of PLINQ

Vito has nearly 20 years in the IT industry, and is presently employed with CVS\Caremark.  His experience ranges from system administration to development.  Vito’s first programming language was Apple Basic, he now primarily work with C# and vbscript to automate system administration tasks, compile and display data for business analysis and develop software to interface with various functions within our automation environment.

The meeting will take place at the usual location, the New Horizons Training Center in Homewood Alabama. We’ll kick off the meet and greet at 6:30 and start the presentations shortly thereafter.

Hello All. I just wanted to extend an invitation to our next meeting. Please RSVP to rduclos@gmail.com if you plan on attending. If you or your company would like to sponsor an event please reply and let me know.
LANUG Meeting – Tuesday, September, 22 2009 6:00 PM
Richard Akers is a Technical Consultant with CTS. He has been a developer for almost 10 years now, in both the Java and Microsoft technology spaces. He just recently moved over to Mobile from across the bay, and working on a masters degree in Computer Information Systems at the University of South Alabama. When not working or at school, he spends most of his free time playing with his home network or crawling around cyberspace to find new and interesting uses for the Web. Rich is an avid user of Cloud technologies, with social networking accounts, blogs, and web services spread all over the net. Rich has been a part of LANUG since January ’09.

Topic: Social Networking for Modern Developers

Do you Tweet at work? How up to date is your Blog? When you hear the term ‘Cloud’, do you think of more than just a rainy day? Social networking, when used properly, has always been a valuable tool for any professional these days. However, the more connected we get, the more important these social networks become. I intend to discuss the pros and cons of social networking, highlighting various sites, tools, and activities on the web that every developer should be familiar with. I’ll talk about your blogs, why you should have them, and what you should or shouldn’t put on them. Time permitting, I might even be able to justify the existence of Twitter! By the end of the discussion, everyone should have a better idea of ways to use the cloud both personally and professionally.

Location: Mobile Information Technology (MIT) 651 Church St Mobile, AL 36602

Sponsor: CTS (http://www.askcts.com)

Out of Browser Experiences with Silverlight 3 at the next BSDA Meeting

leave a comment »

Local MVP Todd Miranda will be presenting “Out of Browser Experiences with Silverlight 3″ at the Thursday, September 10th 2009 Birmingham Software Developers Association meeting. With Silverlight 3 developers are no longer tied to the browser.  Silverlight 3 introduces a new feature enabling a Silverlight 3 component to be run from a user’s desktop.  While this is a wonderful new capability, it comes with its own pitfalls. How does it handle when a user is not connected to the internet? How do we get updates installed on the client’s machine? How do we store any work the client did locally and sync with the network when available?  In this presentation, Todd Miranda will try to answers these questions and more.

Todd Miranda is a software engineer with over 20 years of experience in engineering software solutions. He has a passion for sharing the things he has learned with others and evangelizing about .NET. He is a Microsoft MVP in ASP.NET and continues to stay very involved in the developer community. Todd has presented at various venues and events including user group events, code camps, product launch events, and MSDN events. He is current on the board of the Birmingham .NET User Group and the Silverlight Nights User Group. Todd currently works as the .NET Development Manager for DAXKO in Birmingham, Alabama.

As usual the meeting will kick off at 6:30 pm with announcements then move into the presentation. The meeting will take place at the usual location, the New Horizons training center in Homewood Alabama.

BUG.NET for Tuesday Sep 8 2009 – Why You Should Care About Dependency Injection

leave a comment »

At the next BUG.NET meeting Jeff Barnes, MVP, will be presenting Why You Should Care About Dependency Injection.
Over the last year, buzzwords such as Inversion of Control, Dependency Injection, and containers have become increasingly popular in the world of .NET development. However, many developers are still wondering what’s the big deal? Are you curious what these terms actually mean? Would you like to know why the concepts are important as well as how and when to apply them? If so, please join me for this practical and interactive discussion about how you can greatly reduce the coupling of your code and increase the flexibility of your application by leveraging these concepts. The Unity IoC Container will be used as a reference for this presentation, but the concepts are applicable to your container of choice.
The meeting will kick off at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, September 8 2009 at the local New Horizons learning center.
